Eagle Updates March 18 - 22

Dear Shiloh Families,

As you may recall, it was announced in December that Mrs. Duchow would leave Shiloh in the 2020-21 school year to lead the opening of the new elementary school in the town of Mead. We are very excited to announce that we now know who our new principal will be when she leaves...Mr. Nick Edwards! For the 2019-20 school year, Mr. Edwards and Mrs. Duchow will continue to lead Shiloh as co-principals, with Mr. Edwards taking on more and more of the lead principal roles while Mrs. Duchow assists and plans for the new school. We think Shiloh will benefit greatly from this gradual transition of leadership, and we are excited for what the future holds at both schools. Thank you for your support as we venture forth.

In other news, we recently conducted a survey of our community to get a better sense of the climate at Shiloh Hills. We are so grateful to the 148 people who took the survey, because your responses help us identify areas of strength and areas for growth. Below are the questions and percentages of respondents' answers.

Two questions solicited input on suggestions for improvement. 174 comments were shared between those two questions. A general love for Shiloh, the responsive staff, excellent communication, and satisfaction with the work of our staff were the most frequent themes, with 88% of the comments mentioning one ore more of them.

Additional suggestions for feedback were mentioned less frequently but are still important for us to consider as we explore ways to improve the educational experience at Shiloh. These suggestions included improved student transportation, more family involvement activities, increased recess supervision, improved communication from teachers, longer lunch times, improved "customer service" in the office, and improved teacher attendance. 17% of the comments mentioned one or more of these topics.

Again, we are grateful to you for taking the time to give us feedback. We are even more grateful for your support and teamwork. As you know, we want every child to make significant growth during his or her time at Shiloh Hills, and we can't do it without YOU, the child's first teacher.

Please note the important calendar events below, and update your own calendar as necessary.

Thanks for reading and have a wonderful week!

Mrs. Duchow and Mr. Edwards

Smarter Balanced Assessment

In April and May of every year, we give our students an assessment to check to see how we have done throughout the year. You may recall that it is our goal in math and reading that every child who comes to us at grade level will maintain that growth and grow one year academically throughout the 9 months we have him or her. We know that every child who comes to us below grade level must grow more than one year in order to close the gap. The Smarter Balanced Assessment is one tool that helps us measure this growth.

If you have a child in grades 3 - 6, he or she is scheduled to take the Smarter Balanced Assessment on various days throughout April and May. A schedule will come out as April draws nearer, but in the meantime, we respectfully ask that you do not schedule appointments or family vacations during April and May that will require your child to miss school. Making up this assessment is stressful for students, who then end up missing another school day to make it up. It also taxes building staff, who we must find subs for so they can conduct make up testing for students.
