Eagle Updates, November 13-16, 2018

Greetings, Shiloh Families!

We have a few important reminders for you this week. Thanks for reading!

First, our PTSO sponsored a fun "yoyo assembly" last week, and yoyos are for sale for the remainder of this week. Students who already brought money for a yoyo will receive them Tuesday, November 13. Your child can still buy one for the remainder of this week. Students may play with their yoyos at recess only in designated spots until next Wednesday, November 21. After that, they must go home and stay home. Thanks for your help with this!

And speaking of toys, did you know that other than this brief yoyo exception, there is a "no toy" rule at Shiloh? This includes Pokemon cards, baseball cards, dolls, etc. The reasons for this are many, but here are the top two reasons: 1. Toys get lost and sometimes stolen. 2. Toys cause distractions in class and as you recall, we have some big goals for our kids. We can't afford avoidable distractions if we want to achieve those goals. The only exceptions are when the toy is for show and tell, or it is recess equipment. Although we have many available for check out here, students may bring their own soccer balls, basketballs, and other ball equipment to play with at recess.

We realize you may not be aware of this, so we are linking to our Shiloh Student Handbook here. Please take a look.

Please remember to dress your child appropriately for the chilly weather that is ahead of us. Warm coats, hats, gloves, and boots are important. We follow district guidelines when deciding when to go out and when to stay in. We go outside except when it's pouring down rain or when the temperature, with windchill, is below 16 degrees.  It is critical for our kids to get fresh air and run around, so dress them warmly!

Well, you may not think so...but our kids think snow rules! At Shiloh, the other kinds of snow rules are:

  • Save snowball fights for home.
  • Children may throw snow at our snow targets that our custodian puts out when it snows.
  • Children may build snowmen.
  • Children may only work on snowmen they built themselves.
  • We discourage children from eating snow, but let's face it...that's WAY too enticing for them and really hard to enforce. Please make sure your own child knows where YOU stand on eating snow.

If these rules are broken, it is an automatic missed recess with some kind of alternative physical activity, like walking or running laps or doing jumping jacks in the Eagles Nest. Not nearly as fun as playing in the snow.

Some of the best jobs of the future will only be open to workers who can think flexibly and mathematically. You are invited to come to Shiloh on Tuesday, December 4 from 5:30 - 7:00 pm for a FREE Spaghetti dinner and to learn how we are setting our Shiloh Eagles up for success in math! Here is the schedule:

5:30 - 5:55 Students go to class to practice and prepare their math game to share with their parents.

5:30 - 5:55 Parents go to the cafeteria to learn about "memorization" vs "automaticity" and why this difference matters SO MUCH for our students.

6:00 - 6:30 Parents join their children in their classrooms for math game time!

6:30 - 7:00 Dinner in the cafeteria

6:30 - 7:00 Open ended STEM activities in the library (STEM=Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math)

On Thursday, November 15 you can pick up your child's PTSO cookie dough fund raiser orders from 3:30 - 6 pm in the cafeteria.
